It was...ORANGE PANSIES!

Color Symbolism

Orange is an attention-grabbing color that combines the intensity of red with the happiness of yellow. It represents high-energy, enthusiasm, and warmth as well as anxiety and arrogance. People usually tend to either love or hate orange.

Why Are Pansies Orange??

Orange pansies are almost exclusively selectively bred as a hybrid of red and yellow pansies (which are genetically different). Most orange flowers are able to attract pollinators better, especially butterflies and bees, which are most drawn to warmer colors. However, the reason that these pansies are orange is most likely due to the fact that UT's official color is orange.

Next Steps

To appreciate the color orange, notice how many and what kind of pollinators you can find around the flower patch. Are there more or less insects than you would expect? (Side note: This many differ based on the season).
